The Key to Dental Practice Productivity

I attended the first Dawson Academy dental course in St. Petersburg, Florida in my first year of practice. What I heard was not a product-driven technique, but rather a comprehensive system of practice that included an emphasis on simplifying complex cases which begins with a complete new patient exam.

It may seem counter intuitive that an examination, which does not have a high fee, is that important. I learned that a complete exam is the key to productivity and distinguishes your practice from the usual and customary dentist. An exam must be scheduled for enough time to uncover all of the problems and discuss their implications with your new patient.

If you don’t diagnose it, you can’t treat it- but more than that, it is consistent with our philosophy of giving patients optimum care in an efficient manner. This type of approach is what makes it a win-win proposition.

It makes good business sense to treat patients in an excellent and efficient manner- which is exactly what our dental school instructors are trying to get into our heads before we graduate. As soon as we enter the business world, we realize that the practical application of what we were taught can be very challenging.

The good news is help is available if you seek it. In the process of taking a variety of courses you will find instructors or education centers that match with your values and philosophy of practice.

For me, with each course I took at the Dawson Academy, the more sense it made. As I continued in the curriculum as a new dentist, I found that the message was reinforced at each seminar and hands-on course. I was energized by being around like-minded doctors who had a similar desire to get better in every aspect of practice.
