Important considerations for successful adhesive results
So when we think about trying to get great adhesive results, number one is we have to understand what it is we’re trying to do, so we need to understand the materials.
Understand what you’re using
One of the big hints that I give you straightaway is whatever materials you’re going to use, read the instructions because they’re all a little bit different, so it helps a great deal. But we also need to understand the materials that we’re using. For example, with porcelain, we need to understand how to prepare those materials. We need to understand the substrate that we’re trying to adhere to. Is it dentine? Is it enamel? How do we treat those surfaces? And then we also need to understand the preparation that we’ve developed. Is it an adhesive preparation? Is it more of a traditional preparation?
Consider what the adhesive is going on
The last thing that we need to think about is the environment that we’re sticking this into. If we can’t keep it dry, it’s probably not going to last for an adhesive restoration. We may need to think about a more usual technique there, maybe a cement-able restoration. So we need to think about each of those aspects in order to get successful adhesion, but number one thing that I’d ask you to do is to understand the materials that you’re using and then to think very carefully about the substrate that you’re trying to adhere to.
