How to introduce photography into your practice (and why)

Digital photography is an integral part of my diagnosis and treatment planning. It is also an integral part of The Dawson Academy philosophy. Knowing how to introduce digital photography to your team will ensure that they will know how to properly take photos that can be used during the diagnosis and treatment planning stage.

Get the right gear

The first step to integrating photography into your practice is to get a nice camera that can take both closeup photos as well as full face photos. Here at The Dawson Academy, we give every patient a Complete Examination and take a series of 21 photographs. These photos can be uploaded into The Dawson Diagnostic Wizard® treatment planning software or used in the paper version of our checklist protocols. Each one of those photographs provides specific information so we can make proper diagnosis and treatment planning with those.

Train your staff

Getting your staff on board to be able to learn how to properly photograph takes time. You may need some training with how to take these photos yourself, but it’s a very quick curve to taking proper, high-quality digital photographs that can be used to diagnose and treatment plan all of your dentistry. It’s something that I cannot live without and the other Dawson Academy faculty and students can’t live without it, as well.
